{New Treasures} Westfield New Jersey Photographer

When my Gram was younger, she was a quilter, and a very good one.  She custom designed all of her work.  Her hand-quilting (and crewel work) was displayed in museums and won countless competitions, including those put on by the Amish. She beat the Amish.  I mean… woah. When I was a little girl, probably about Thaya’s age, my Gram came and stayed with us – I think it was for the summer. Her hand built quilting frame was set up in our living room, between the big picture windows and the couch.  She would sit in that spot, with perfect light, and quilt for hours.  I would crawl under the frame, see the shadow of her hand through the fabric, and watch the rhythm of her needle as she created the most perfect stitches.  They were so small, so even. Just perfect.  I’d look at her tools, hold her thimbles in my hand, and laugh about how big it was on my thumb.  She’d even let me do some of the quilting, and it was such a thrill.  I was so careful and I tried so hard, and from what I hear, she never took out any of the stitches that I did.

I guess I’m like my Gram in the sense that I love creating things from fabric, yarn, thread.  I don’t know that I’ll ever be as good as she was, and unfortunately by the time I showed a real interest in doing it myself, she had started to go blind and was unable to teach me her amazing craft.  Everything I’ve learned, I’ve taught myself, and I suppose that on its own is an accomplishment, and a testament.  I know the more I do it, the more I’ll learn and the better I’ll become, but I’m far from perfect and I’m ok with that.

I ordered some of these little pretties over the past week, and I’m so happy they arrived (despite the storm!)…

From Purl Soho I ordered the Mary Flanagan Hand Dyed Wool Bundles. I plan on using this tutorial on their blog to make a Quillow! From Amazon, I used some of my holiday gift cards to get Last-Minute Patchwork + Quilted Gifts.  Sometimes I think I get as much enjoyment out of photographing these little beauties as I do from creating from them!

Two more shots from this little shoot will be available in my Etsy Shop later today. But not right now because my girls are seriously wild and may tear apart the house if I don’t go and calm them down!
